Soundtrack to ROBOTANISTS - A Band from Los Angeles
We are a band from nowhere living in Los Angeles...
Amidst the dance-rock scenesters, the single-centric trendmakers, and the warhol-ist-photo-bloggers of Los Angeles lies a sleeping giant called ROBOTANISTS, who until now has been sitting it out and making music to do anything but dance to. Laying claim to no afro-pop influences, husband/wife duo Sarah Ellquist and Daniel de Blanke lie at the ghostly heart of Robotanists. The two x-classical musicians first joined forces on an ambitious live music/movie project in which their songwriting efforts were instantly likened to Radiohead, yet praised as being "more immediate and warm, closer to the gentler moments of Mogwai, the mournful Sigur Ros, the torch songs of Jeff Buckley and the ether-clouded melodies of Broadcast," (OC Weekly).
After achieving successes culminating in performances at CMJ, Coachella and even as an official selection of the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, the duo was ready to leave movies behind. In the fall of 2006 Ellquist & de Blanke formed Robotanists with the help of bassist Keith Boyarsky and drummer Preston Scott Phillips. Together the group has honed an intimately epic sound, mixing post-classic rock pop-bravado a-la Electric Light Orchestra, with the barbiturately reminiscent sounds of Portishead. Under the wing of their musical Co-Op, Overhead Records, Robotanists have a series of self-released EPs already in the works, each one thematically driven by a single emotion. Their first installment, "Close Down the Woods," is a 7 song collection centered on the complexities of loss, and punctuated by the aptly renamed Foreigner hit "I Don't Wanna Know What Love Is." Their rapid rise and response on the road has placed Robotanists on the verge of a delightfully un-L.A. sound and story.
